GOLDENSEAL

📷

Every month I'm going to choose an herb or an essential oil to share it's medicinal purposes and unique traits with you! This month I chose Goldenseal, scientifically known as Hydrastis Canadensis. This is one of my all tame favorite herbs and is so, so useful for any season but especially allergy season. Also note that any holistic or herbal remedies I offer are just suggestions from my own experience. Always talk to an herbalist and your primary care doctor before using.

Here are a few helpful facts about this magical herb!

  • Goldenseal belongs to the Buttercup family and is a type of yellow alkaloid berberine, which means it is systematically drying and makes it a great antihistamine. (Think Benadryl)

  • Its antibacterial & antifungal

  • It helps detox your liver and kidneys

  • Can also reduce fever and pairing this herb with Echinacea helps fight colds off even faster!

  • goldenseal is great for fighting off UTI's and syptoms of STI's

  • You can add it to netti pots to clear out any extra sinus mucus

  • It can also be used as a natural dye ~

Goldenseal has long been used in traditional Native American medicines and traditional Chinese medicine practices. This herb is fairly accessible and you can find it in capsule or tincture form (my personal favorite) in almost all health food stores. You can even find it in tablets and salves or even create your own at-home salve for topical treatments! Just be sure to use everything in moderation. Just as over the counter medicines have side affects so do natural medicines. Do your research! I also provided links at the bottom of the page where you can find these supplements from brands I use and trust.
